Emma Twigg to defend her title at Koninklijke – Holland Beker

As the regatta is drawing near, so is the excitement building: New Zealand’s Emma Twigg will race at this year’s regatta in an attempt to retain her Ladies’s Trophy. Twigg won the trophy last year over Lisa Scheenaard from the Netherlands, and evergreen Ekatarina Karsten from Belarus. This year, the 2014 World Champion racing for Hawkes Bay RC will have to battle it out against, among others, Inge Janssen and Karolien Florijn.

Twigg is one of the many antipodean (New Zealand and Australian) athletes racing at the Holland Beker, as there are entries from Sydney (UTS Haberfield RC, Sydney RC) and Melbourne (Banks RC, Mercantile RC, Melbourne UBC, and Scotch College). Most crews will race both the Holland Beker and next week’s Henley Royal Regatta during their European campaign.

UPDATE: International Entries

-As the biggest international regatta in The Netherlands, we are once again proud of our large and diverse line-up of rowers from all over the world! Alongside Olympic medallists Ondřej Synek and Damir Martin, we welcomed two top women’s crews from Boston College and Olympic gold medallists Josh Booth and Josh Dunkley-Smith amongst others.

We can now confirm that Hans Gruhne and Karl Schulze, Olympic gold medallists in the German men’s quadruple sculls, will test their speed together in the men’s double sculls on the Bosbaan.

Along with Booth and Dunkley-Smith, a number of Australian college, university and club crews are coming all the way from Down Under to compete. A national selection of Czech elite rowers has also enrolled along with Ondřej Synek.

From Denmark, fifteen competitors from Bagsvaerd Rowing Club Kopenhagen , as well as ten from Craft Center Odense will come to race in Amsterdam. From the UK, we get five rowers from Nottingham Rowing Club. We also welcome entries from Benin, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Portugal and France. It’s always a treat to watch international athletes perform alongside Dutch rowers at the Holland Beker!

The 124th edition of the Holland Beker is now less than a month away, and the first international entries are being confirmed. Among them is the multiple World- and European Champion in the single sculls, Ondřej Synek. The four-time winner of the Holland Beker trophy recently showed his form at the 2017 European Championships on his home waters in Racice, where he claimed the title with a dominant performance.

Synek vs. Martin

Synek will not be rowing to his fifth Holland Beker victory that easily however, for Croatian sculler Damir Martin will also be present at the Bosbaan. Martin stunned the rowing world last year in the Olympic final, where he was narrowly beaten by reigning Olympic Champion Mahe Drysdale after a breathtaking final sprint towards the line. Ultimately, after photo-finish examination, Martin was awarded the silver medal, while Drysdale retained his title. With Martin’s participation, the Holland Beker will surely see fireworks.

International Crews

In the men’s pair, Josh Booth and Josh Dunkley-Smith from Australia have confirmed their attendance. The Olympic silver medallists from the 2016 Olympic Games in the men’s four have teamed up in the pair and have chosen to compete at the Holland Beker Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta this year. Other international competitors making their way to Amsterdam will be among others a women’s crew from Boston College, competing in the women’s eight and the U23 women’s four, and lightweight rowers from France and Japan. These rowers and many more will race on the iconic Bosbaan course on the weekend of June 24th & 25th . More entries will be confirmed the following weeks, but one thing is certain: rowers at the Koninklijke – Holland Beker will be competing with the best!
