Save the date – June 26 & 27, 2021

The year was 2019. The location was the Willem-Alexanderbaan in Rotterdam, located in a typical Dutch polder (read: flatland). The Koninklijke-Holland Beker, that year serving as Word Cup III of the ‘19 season, saw over 700 from 42 countries participating. The first two days, started on Friday July 12, saw highs and lows, tears and joy, pain and lactic acid for all teams. However, the last day, Sunday July 14, was the one that counted for this event. Being one of the last races before the World Championship, the best teams in the world used World Cup III as their last preparation. 

Traditionally the Men’s Single Sculls serves as the main event of the Koninklijke-Holland Beker, with the race winner being awarded the Holland Beker. In 2019 the field was outstanding, with mastodons as Robbie Manson (NZL, at that time holder of the Worlds Best Time), Ondrej Synek (CZE, multiple World Champion) and Sverri Nielsen (DEN, runner up in the 2019 World Championship) racing amongst the other participating athletes. The final was nerve-wracking and exciting, with Nielsen and Kjetil Borch (NOR) pushing each other until the finish line. Borch led the first 1000m, before Nielsen took over and managed to keep ahead of the field. He claimed the Holland Beker with a lead of less than half a second!

Fastforward ..

The year will be 2021. The location will be the Bosbaan, Amsterdam. The date to write down is June 26 & 27. Why, you ask? Because on those days, The Koninklijke-Holland Beker will return. Being organized since 1886, it is time again to see who will claim the one and only Holland Beker.

Het bestuur van de Koninklijke- Holland Beker laat weten in 2020 geen Koninklijke- Holland Beker wedstrijden te organiseren.
Traditioneel wordt de Koninklijke- Holland Beker meestal het weekend na World Cup II verroeid. Komend jaar staat de Koninklijke- Holland Beker op de roeikalender voor het weekend van 9/10 mei 2020. Door het Olympisch jaar ziet de (inter)nationale roeikalender er anders uit en hebben wij moeten concluderen dat de verwachtingen voor een goed bezet en aantrekkelijk (inter)nationaal deelnemersveld er ongunstig uitzien.
Het bestuur heeft meerdere alternatieven onderzocht en is helaas tot de conclusie gekomen dat er op de roeikalender geen geschikt moment meer beschikbaar is voor het organiseren van de Aegon Koninklijke- Holland Beker wedstrijden in 2020.
Na de succesvolle World Cup Finals in 2019 waar we hebben kunnen genieten van absoluut toproeien is het voor het bestuur een bittere pil te moeten concluderen dat de editie in 2020 geen doorgang kan vinden. Het bestuur en al haar vrijwilligers richten zich nu op een mooie editie in 2021 waarop we u allen weer hopen te mogen begroeten.

The board of the Holland Beker has decided not to organize the Holland Beker regatta in 2020.
The upcoming year, the (inter)national rowing calendar will be different due to the Olympics, therefore the board had to conclude that the expectations to attract many (inter)national rowers in 2020 seems unfavorable.
After the successful World Cup Finals in 2019, where we enjoyed the very best of rowing, it is very unfortunate to conclude that the 2020 edition will be canceled. The board and all its volunteers are now focused on hosting a great edition again in 2021, where we hope to welcome you all again.
